Andrew Jackson & The Trail of Tears
On one of the last days of May 1838, a Cherokee widow named Ooloocha was doing her housework while keeping an eye on her youngest children when she heard a commotion in the yard. On opening the door, she saw a platoon of soldiers surrounding her house, their rifles pointing at her chest. Ooloocha described what happened next,
"They drove us out of doors and did not permit us to take anything with us. Not even a second change of clothes, only the clothes we had on, and they shut the doors after they turned us out. They would not permit any of us to enter the house to get anything, but drove us off to a fort that was built at New Echota".
